El ano es la última parte del tubo digestivo. Está en el extremo del recto. Es por donde salen las heces del cuerpo. Consiste en un anillo muscular (llamado esfínter) que se abre durante la evacuación para permitir el paso de las heces y también células delgadas que recubren el interior del ano. La mayoría de los tipos de cáncer anal se originan en estas células delgadas de la mucosa. También se denominan células escamosas. La parte inferior del ano, donde se une con la piel, se denomina margen anal.
