Uno de los sistemas más importantes del cuerpo es el tubo digestivo, por lo general funciona sin ningún problema. Sin embargo se pueden formar pequeñas bolsas en el colon. Estas pequeñas bolsas se pueden formar cuando la capa interna del tubo sale a través de un punto débil. Se puede desarrollar en cualquier parte del tubo, por lo general se forman en la parte izquierda del intestino grueso. Esta zona se conoce como el colon descendiente y sigmoide, las bolsas se conocen como diverticulosis. Cuando una o más de las bolsas se inflaman, la afección se llama diverticulitis.
