La catarata es una opacidad que se forma en el cristalino dentro del ojo. Dentro del ojo hay una lente transparente (cristalino) que ayuda a enfocar la luz. Esto permite ver las imágenes nítidamente. Al envejecer, el cristalino se enturbia progresivamente. Esta lente turbia se llama catarata. Las cataratas fragmentan la luz que entra en el ojo, lo que hace que resulte difícil enfocar. Aunque las cataratas suelen presentarse en ambos ojos, uno se puede enturbiar más rápido que el otro.
