La histerectomía es un procedimiento común al que algunas mujeres necesitan someterse para detener el dolor, las hemorragias u otros problemas. Puede hacerse de varias maneras. La histerectomía vaginal es una cirugía para extirpar el útero de la mujer. El útero se extirpa a través de la vagina. El útero es un órgano ubicado en la parte baja del abdomen. Tiene forma de pera invertida. La abertura al final del útero es el cuello uterino, el cual desemboca en la vagina. La parte superior del útero se llama fondo o fundus uterino. Las dos trompas de Falopio se unen al útero cerca del fondo uterino y, a su vez, se conectan con los ovarios.
