It stores bile to help with digestion. Sometimes itmay need to be removed. A common reason why is gallstones.Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is 1 way to take out the gallbladder. For this surgery, you are firstgiven medicine, so you fall asleep. You won’t feel pain.Your surgeon then makes a few small cuts in your belly. They may pump some carbon dioxide intoyour belly to inflate it.Next, your surgeon puts a laparoscope into 1 of the cuts. This thin tube with a camera sends imagesto a video screen. It lets your surgeon see inside your belly.Your surgeon then puts tools into the other cuts. They use these tools to take out your gallbladder.Once done, your surgeon removes the scope and other tools. They close all cuts in your belly.To help you recover, you may go home the same day or spend the night in the hospital.You can likely get back to your usual activities in about a week.Talk with your care team if you have any questions.
