With LASIK surgery, you will soon be seeing better. And that’s definitely a good thing.LASIK uses a laser to fix the shape of your cornea. The cornea is the clear covering on the front ofyour eye. It helps focus light.A problem with the shape of the cornea can cause: Myopia, when you have trouble seeing things faraway, commonly called ‘nearsightedness’.Hyperopia, when you have trouble seeing things up close, commonly called “farsightedness”.And astigmatism, when your cornea is shaped more like a football than a basketball, causing blurryvision.LASIK can help correct these common eyesight problems.For the surgery, you will be awake. But your eyes are first numbed with eye drops. You may also begiven medicine to help you relax.Your eye surgeon props open your eyes with an eyelid holder. This tool makes sure you don’t blinkduring the surgery.Your eye surgeon then puts a suction ring on your eye to hold it in place. At this point, your vision maydim. You may also feel some pressure or discomfort.Using a laser, your eye surgeon makes a cut in the top layer of your cornea. They lift up the tissueand fold it back, making a flap. The suction ring is then removed. Your vision may be blurry at thistime.Your eye surgeon will now ask you to stare at a light. Focusing on the light keeps your eyes very stillduring the next part of the surgery.With your eyes in place, your eye surgeon uses a computer-guided laser to reshape your cornea.This part of the procedure lasts for 10 to 90 seconds.Once done, your eye surgeon puts the flap of corneal tissue back into place. The cornea will heal byitself.After the surgery, you may be given an eye shield to wear. It helps protect your cornea while it heals.For a few days, your eyes may itch, burn, or water. You may also have vision changes. But youreyesight will get better in the next couple weeks to months.
