Preparing for Transcatheter Valve Surgery
Preparing for Transcatheter Valve SurgeryIn the time leading up to your Transcatheter Valve surgery, it is normal to feel nervous. But there are steps you can take to prepare for your surgery to help make sure your procedure goes asplanned.Transcatheter Valve surgery is a minimally invasive procedure. This means your doctor will use small openingsin your groin or chest to thread a thin tube called a catheter through your blood vessels to reach your heart anddo any repairs needed.Minimally invasive surgery usually requires less hospital time and has a faster recovery time than traditionalopen-heart surgery, but it is still very important that you follow your doctor’s directions exactly to prepare. Before your surgery, your healthcare provider will do some tests to make sure you are healthy enough for theprocedure. Some tests that are commonly given before a Transcatheter Valve surgery include: blood tests, imaging testslike Computed tomography commonly called CT scanning, electrocardiogram, and other catheter tests. The results of these tests can also help your healthcare team better plan for the procedure itself. In the days leading up to your surgery, your healthcare provider will give you specific instructions to follow, including: when you should stop eating and drinking; when you can take your regular medications, and if youcan take them on the day of your procedure; and if you should take any new medications before the surgery, including antibiotics to help prevent infection.Make sure to follow all of these instructions closely. If you have any questions about what to do before yourprocedure, talk to your healthcare provider. You may also have questions about what will happen during the procedure. For example, you may be undergeneral anesthesia, which means you are asleep for the procedure, or you may be given a pain-relievingmedication and stay awake.“The day of the surgery I was first guy up at 7 AM, and Dr. Galani came in to see me then and said "I'llsee you shortly." And in actuality the anesthesia dosage was less than a big-time one when you'reunder for hours-plus at a time, and so even coming back out of anesthesia was much easier.”Talk to your healthcare provider about what you can expect so you can feel more comfortable.Any surgery has risks. Talk to your healthcare provider before your procedure about these risks so, just likeyour healthcare provider, you can feel confident that the benefits outweigh the risks. This program is for informational purposes only.
