What is a Ventilator?
What is a Ventilator?A ventilator helps you breathe when you cannot breathe on your own. This machine gets oxygen into the lungsand helps get rid of carbon dioxide. Ventilators are used during surgery, or if you have a serious condition thatmakes breathing very difficult or impossible.A ventilator is made of several parts: the base machine and the breathing tube. The breathing tube isconnected to the base machine and the other end is placed in the windpipe through the nose or mouth.A ventilator does not treat a disease or condition but allows you to keep breathing while giving treatments timeto work. Most of the time, ventilators are used for a short period of time until you can breathe on your own.For more information on ventilators and when they may be used in treatment go to: www.nhlbi.gov and searchventilator support. This program is for informational purposes only.
