Your Baby’s NICU Bed
Your Baby’s NICU BedDeeAnna Serna-Flood, Respiratory Care PractitionerThis is what’s called an isolette, or a warmer. What’s great about this in the NICU is that since it is aconvertible we can use this in all different types of situations. With a touch of a button, we can quickly get to the baby and it still provides warmth and heat. We have this byway of what’s called a servo control, which automatically senses the changes that the baby needs. It’s a littlethermometer attached to the baby and if the baby is getting a little colder it senses it, it warms it up. Or if thebaby is too hot, which also can be bad, it cools the whole little environment down.It also provides humidity. We have a little humidity thing here for our preterm babies. Their skin is not ready tobe outside and so it provides nice warmth and humidity to protect their fragile skin. Here we have the monitoring devices. We watch the baby’s heart rates, the respiratory rates, their saturation, which is their oxygen levels. So we have all of those available. As well as inlet ports for the ventilator here if thebaby requires ventilatory support, it allows access all the way here. Also the nurses have their IV pulls, so everything is nice and complete, it makes it a nice little environment forthe baby and the parents. So when this is closed we also have access to the infant via little portholes. And so from both sides we havefull access to the whole baby. We also can put the sides down. This is helpful for the doctors if the doctorsneed to get in and put lines in we can get to the baby from all sides. When we’re done we just close it right back up, keep it nice and quiet, provide the humidity, keep it nice andsnug. And it’s one of the greatest developments we’ve had as far as being in the NICU.This program is for informational purposes only.
