Step-by-Step: Changing Your Urinary Catheter BagChanging Your Urinary Catheter Bag.Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.Empty the drainage bag into the toilet.Don’t touch the valve tip.Place a towel under the connection between the catheter and the drainage tube.Pinch the catheter to prevent leakage.Twist to disconnect the drainage tube from the catheter.Set the bag aside for cleaning.Clean the tip of the catheter with an alcohol wipe.Remove the cover from the drainage tube on the clean leg bag.Use an alcohol wipe to clean the tip of the drainage tube on the leg bag.Connect the leg bag drainage tube to the catheter.Fasten the top leg strap. Don’t make it too tight.Fasten the bottom leg strap. Don’t make it too tight.Tape the drainage tube to your leg.
