How to Fit Crutches and a WalkerThe crutches or walker you use must be the right size so that you can move about safely. We'll show you how to fit crutches or a walker. For either one, the first step is to stand up straight. Wear well-fitting and low-heel shoes for walking.Let's look at underarm crutches first. The crutches are tall enough for you if the top of the crutch pad is 1 ½ to 2 inches, or almost 2 finger widths, below your armpits. To figure out what the total length of the crutch should be, measure the distance from your armpit to about 6 inches in front of your shoe. For the hand grips, make sure your shoulders are relaxed and your arms are slightly bent at the elbows. Having your elbows slightly bent lets you fully extend them when you begin walking or taking steps. Also check that your wrists are even with the handgrips when your hands hang at your sides. When you use the crutches for walking or standing, use the tripod position. Don't let your armpits rest on the crutch pads. This can cause tingling, numbness, and loss of muscle strength in your arms.If you have followed all of these steps and the crutches still don't feel right, ask your healthcare provider or physical therapist to check the fit.Now let's look at a walker. The walker is tall enough for you if your wrists are even with the handgrips when your arms hang at your sides.Check that your arms are slightly bent at the elbows when your hands are on the grips. If the walker folds up, be sure you know how to lock it open. Check that it's locked open before you use it.
