Step-by-Step: Taking a Child’s Rectal Temperature (0-3 Years of Age)

Remove the cap from the tip of the thermometer. Use a wipe to thoroughly clean the tip. Use your fingers to spread lubricant on the tip of the thermometer. Make sure the lubricant covers 1/2 inch of the tip. Turn the thermometer on. Lay your child on their back and lift their legs in the air by holding their feet. Use a wipe to clean their genital and buttocks area. Insert the thermometer into their rectum. Make sure the tip is inserted no more than 1/2 inch. Hold the thermometer in place until it beeps to tell you it has successfully taken their temperature. Remove the thermometer from your child's rectum. Read the temperature on the thermometer. Clean the tip of the thermometer with soap and water. Dry the tip. Place the cap back onto the thermometer.
