You may also be familiar with its generic name,oxycodone extended release. Oxycontin is a high alert medication, which means if youdo not take it exactly as prescribed, it may cause illness or injury.To understand how Oxycontin works, let’s look at how pain affects your body.Thousands of tiny nerve cells in your body sense many feelings, like cold, heat,pressure, and pain. When your body is injured, the tiny nerve cells send a messageto your brain that says, “I’m in pain here!” Oxycontin blocks the pain message beingsent from your nerve cells to your brain, to relieve your pain.Oxycontin comes in a tablet. Your healthcare provider will decide how much you needto take, but dosages range from 10 milligrams to 80 milligrams.Oxycontin is a powerful medication. Some people should not take it. Do not takeOxycontin if you have severe asthma, trouble breathing, or other lung problems.If you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant or are breastfeeding, tell your healthcareprovider. Before taking Oxycontin, tell your healthcare provider if you have a historyof head injury; seizures; liver, kidney or thyroid problems; pancreas or gallbladderproblems.Oxycontin can be highly addictive. If you have a history of abuse of street orprescription drugs, or alcohol abuse, tell your healthcare provider. There may be adifferent medication available for you.Some side effects of Oxycontin include constipation, nausea and/or vomiting,headache, dizziness, sleepiness, itching, dry mouth. Do not change your dose.Always swallow the pill whole with plenty of water. Do not cut, break, chew, crush,dissolve or inject this medication. Because this is a long-acting medication, splitting itmay cause you to take a potentially dangerous dose.Take each dose every 12 hours at the same time every day. If you miss a dose, takeyour Oxycontin as soon as possible, and then take your next dose 12 hours later. Ifit’s almost time for your next dose, skip your missed dose and return to your normalmedication schedule.Do not double dose. If you think you have taken too much Oxycontin, call 911. Anoverdose of Oxycontin can cause serious breathing problems that can lead to death.Store Oxycontin away from moisture and direct sunlight. Your bathroom medicinecabinet is not the best place because of moisture. Do not leave your pills where theycan get too hot or too cold.Always store your medication out of sight and out of reach of children to preventaccidents. Because Oxycontin is a narcotic that can cause dependency, it can be a verydesirable drug to addicts. Lock this medication up to prevent stealing and abuse.When you are done taking Oxycontin, crush all of your remaining tablets and mixthem with undesirable trash, like kitty litter or coffee grounds. Do not sell or give yourOxycontin to anyone else. It is against the law and can seriously harm anyone elsetaking it.
