This means preventing falls.Since more than seventy percent of all falls occur at home, follow this checklist to help reduce the risk of falling.Do: Make sure that you have good bright lighting in your home. Use night-lights in your bedroom, hall and bathroom.Do: Make sure rugs are firmly fastened to the floor or use nonskid backing. Remove throw rugs if possible.Do: Move electrical cords so they are not lying on the floor in walking areas.Do: Put handrails in your bathroom for bath, shower and toilet use. And a non-slip mat in the shower.Do: Always use handrails for support on the stairs and make sure stairs are well lit.Other tips to help you prevent the possibility of falling…Do: Stay active. Being active increases your strength and balance.Do: Have your eyes and hearing checked – wear eyeglasses and hearing aids.Do: After taking medication take your time before standing and walking.Medication side effects can increase your risk of falls. Dizziness, sleepiness, and loss of balance.Do Not: Drink too much alcohol. Any alcohol can throw off your balance and coordination.Do Not:Get too little rest.
