Small Steps to Healthy Eating Habits
Small Steps to Healthy Eating HabitsTranscript (page 1 of 2)Many of us don’t make the healthiest choices in what, how, or how much we eat. Butwe can learn how to, by replacing our unhealthy eating habits with healthier eatingbehaviors.Changing behavior doesn’t happen overnight. It’s taken a lifetime to develop thehabits you have now. Learning new ones will take time, and a commitment to stickwith them.Look at it this way: on one end of an imaginary food line are healthy food choices. Onthe other end, are poor food choices. Our eating habits put each of us somewhere onthe line between the two.Where are you? About here? Or maybe here? Wherever you fall on the line, taking justone step toward healthy is a positive move. The first step to changing your eating behavior is to identify your goal, or the reasonyou want to change. You might have just one, or several.Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to make more nutritious choices? Do youwant to eat less calories? Do you feel that you overeat and want to stop?Once you know why you want to change, you’re going to have to learn new behaviors,or steps, that lead you to accomplishing that goal. Each of us can choose for ourselves something that is challenging, but doable. Makingbetter food choices starts with finding out how ready you are to make a change. If you aren’t ready to begin making healthy food choices yet, that’s okay.“It’s just a good idea to at least set the goal of coming back to it in the next threemonths to look and see, ‘Have I made any steps forward? Am I any more20%readygradient meshnow?’”For example, if your goal is to eat less fat, one small step would be to have yournexthealthclipschicken sandwich grilled, instead of fried. Or, you can choose fats carefully bysubstituting olive oil for butter on your bread.Let’s look at another example: say your goal is to eat proper portion sizes. One stepto this goal might be to turn off the TV during snack or mealtime. This will make adifference in the amount that you eat, because distractions can prevent you fromknowing what and how much you’re eating.Suppose your goal is to eat less salt. One step is to cut down on salty luncheon meatsby choosing fresh poultry or meat. Once you’re comfortable with that for a while, youmight be ready to add another step: buying fresh foods instead of canned or frozenfoods, or processed foods. Before too long, you’ll realize that you’ve reached yourgoal of lessening your salt intake just by having made these few steps. It may take a few or many steps to reach your goal. And if you have more than onegoal, take your steps one at a time until each goal is met.
