Morphine is ahigh alert medication, which means if you do not take it exactly as prescribed it maycause illness or injury.To understand how Morphine works, let’s look at how pain affects your body.Thousands of tiny nerve cells in your body sense many feelings; cold, heat, pressure,and pain. When your body is injured, the tiny nerve cells send a message to your brainthat says: I’m in pain here!Morphine works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain.Morphine comes as either a pill or liquid and is available in different types of doses.You may be prescribed a short-acting dose for pain that comes and goes. Or you maybe prescribed an extended release dose for pain that is there all the time. In somecases, your doctor may recommend a combination of short-acting and extendedrelease doses. Make sure you understand exactly what you are taking and how youare supposed to take it to avoid injury.Morphine is a powerful medication. Some people should not take it. Do not takeMorphine if you have asthma, trouble breathing or other lung problems.Do not take Morphine if you have a blockage in your stomach or intestines.If you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant or are breastfeeding, tell your healthcareprovider.Before taking Morphine, tell your healthcare provider if you have a history of:breathing problems; head injury; seizures; liver, kidney or thyroid problems; orpancreas or gallbladder problems.20% gradient meshMorphine can be highly addictive. Get upfrom a sitting or lying position slowly.Do not drive or operate heavy machinery, including your car, until you know howMorphine affects you.Do not drink alcohol while taking Morphine. Drinking alcohol while taking Morphinecan cause serious side effects leading to death.If you have an allergic reaction like: trouble breathing, hives, or swelling of your faceor throat, call 911.If you have: a slow heart rate, weak or shallow breathing, chest pain, fast or poundingheartbeats, or feel like you may pass out, call 911 and get help right away.This is not a complete list of side effects. Do not change your dose or take it for longerthan prescribed.Take Morphine with food, or at least a glass of milk, to avoid upset stomach.If you are taking Morphine Extended Release, always swallow the pill whole withplenty of water.
